A Texas judge claimed God told him a defendant was innocent and asked a jury to keep deliberating after they found her guilty.<\/p>\n
Comal County Judge Jack Robison told the jurors that the conviction of Gloria Romero Perez, on charges of continuous sex trafficking and the sale or purchase of a child, would be a misuse of justice because he believed she was innocent.<\/p>\n
But the jury wasn\u2019t swayed and still found her guilty.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe judge later apologized to the jury, and said something to the effect of, \u2018When God tells me I gotta do something, I gotta do it,\u2019\u201d according to a report on the Jan 12, 2018 incident, from the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct.<\/p>\n
The judge received 18 complaints over the outburst.<\/p>\n
He also reported himself to the commission over the incident, saying he was under extreme stress because of a friend\u2019s death and that he had been experiencing memory lapses. He said he was being treated for a medical condition.<\/p>\n
Two medical experts said the judge\u2019s outburst was caused by temporary \u201cdelirium.\u201d<\/p>\n
The commission issued a public warning to the judge over the incident but didn\u2019t suspend him.<\/p>\n
Romero Perez was sentenced to 25 years in prison. But her conviction was declared a mistrial in October when a judge found that Robison\u2019s ruling was not in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n
She is awaiting a retrial.<\/p>\n
