Co-founder of Dublin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/115686\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Gate Theatre<\/a>, he is remembered as an actor, director, designer, and playwright. He employed a young <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/19488\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Orson Welles<\/a> who had traveled to Ireland. He later appeared as Iago in Welles&#8217; film version of <i>Othello<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>  <b>1983<\/b> The &#8220;Slaughter on Tenth Avenue&#8221; ballet comes to life once more as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/5467\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Richard Rodgers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/6843\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Lorenz Hart<\/a> musical <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Show\/Detail\/5246\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">On Your Toes<\/a><\/i> is revived on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre. The revival outruns its predecessor to play 505 performances.<\/p>\n<p> <b>1989<\/b> &#8220;Gregor Samsa awoke one morning to find he&#8217;s been turned into a giant cockroach.&#8221; It was a punchline in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Show\/Detail\/4170\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">The Producers<\/a><\/i>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/13198\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Franz Kafka<\/a>&#8216;s story <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Show\/Detail\/4311\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Metamorphosis<\/a><\/i> becomes an actual Broadway drama, starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/93041\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Mikhail Baryshnikov<\/a> as Gregor. It runs 96 performances at the Barrymore Theatre.<\/p>\n<p> <b>1993<\/b> <i>Jeffrey<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/27230\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Paul Rudnick<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;AIDS comedy,&#8221; as one reviewer calls it, opens Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre. It closes after a month&#8217;s run.<\/p>\n<p> <b>2003<\/b> From Britain&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/115105\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">National Theatre<\/a> comes <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/production\/vincent-in-brixton-john-golden-theatre-vault-0000008381\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Vincent in Brixton<\/a><\/i>, a portrait of artist Vincent Van Gogh as a young man (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/person\/jochem-ten-haaf-vault-0000042531\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Jochum ten Haaf<\/a>), struggling to support himself as an art dealer, falling in love with an older woman (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/104889\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Clare Higgins<\/a>), and absorbing images that he will someday turn into masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p> <b>2008<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/4343\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Debbie Allen<\/a>&#8216;s all-black revival of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/production\/cat-on-a-hot-tin-roof-broadhurst-theatre-vault-0000001990\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/a><\/i>, starring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/102916\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Anika Noni Rose<\/a> as Maggie and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/45870\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">James Earl Jones<\/a> as Big Daddy, opens at the Broadhurst Theatre. The production also features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/95780\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Phylicia Rashad<\/a> as Big Mama and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/51518\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Terrence Howard<\/a> as Brick.<\/p>\n<p> <b>2011<\/b> A Broadway revival of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbillvault.com\/Person\/Detail\/26288\" target=\"_new\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Jason Miller<\/a>&#8216;s Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning 1972 drama <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/production\/that-championship-season-booth-theatre-vault-0000001704\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">That Championship Season<\/a><\/i> opens on Broadway at the Bernard B.
