(WRIC) &#8212; From deadly weather events and health scares to groundbreaking investigations and a soldier leading police on a wild chase in an armored vehicle, 2018 leaves us with much to digest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, before we turn the page and dive head-first into 2019, let&#8217;s take a look back at eight topics and stories that\u00a0defined 2018 here in Central Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Severe weather rocks Central Virginia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Severe weather dominated the headlines in 2018 with Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On September 14, Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The remnants of Florence hit the Commonwealth hard, causing a historic<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/nws-confirms-10th-tornado-touched-down-in-virginia\/1457757964\"><strong>tornado outbreak<\/strong>.<\/a> The National Weather Service confirmed ten tornadoes touched down in Virginia, nine hitting Central Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of those tornadoes ripped through a Chesterfield County business, killing 60-year-old Ronald D. Bishop, who was an employee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists John Bernier and Matt DiNardo saw dramatic video from a viewer of that tornado for the first time while they were live on air. A tractor-trailer rear-ended the fire engine, killing Lieutenant Brad Clark and injuring three others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#8217;s remnants also caused half a million people to lose power, as the storm&#8217;s high winds knocked over trees and power lines, which also closed hundreds of roads.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What the Health!?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2018, we experienced a dangerously deadly flu season, a giant plant capable of burning people,\u00a0new warnings about vaping, and more recalls than we could count. If you survived, hats off to you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deadly Flu Season<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In January and February, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/flu-medication-runs-low-in-richmond-pharmacies_20180326073343744\/1078268485\">flu medication ran low<\/a><\/strong> in the Richmond area, and VCU medical center saw <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/flu-season-brings-record-numbers-for-pediatric-patients-at-vcu-health_2018032607255325\/1078206462\">record numbers of pediatric patients<\/a><\/strong> for the flu. Then in March, the CDC reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/health\/cdc-warns-of-a-second-wave-of-flu-virus-happening-now\/1079883726\"><strong>second dangerous wave<\/strong><\/a> of the flu virus. According to the CDC, 185 children died in from the flu during the 2017-18 flu season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease plagues children<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The summer brought the end of flu season, but the beginning of the spread of a contagious disease among children. Childcare providers around the Commonwealth received letters warning about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/virginia-news\/report-contagious-virus-common-in-children-spreading-across-virginia\/1296550721\">hand, foot and mouth disease<\/a><\/strong>. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.<\/small>\n             <\/div><figcaption> (Photo courtesy WKRN) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a class=\"close-reveal-modal\" aria-label=\"Close\"><i class=\"fa fa-close\"\/><\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Giant Hogweed<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In June, counties around Virginia reported sightings of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/virginia-news\/dangerous-plant-that-can-cause-blindness-severe-burns-spotted-in-virginia\/1241530613\">Giant Hogweed, an invasive plant that can cause third-degree burns and permanent blindness.<\/a> <\/strong>State officials warned people to be on the lookout while hiking and clearing their yards. One Fredericksburg-area teen suffered second and third-degree burns after accidentally brushing his face and arms against the plant during a landscaping job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Vaping\/<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Juuling<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All year long, 8News has been investigating the dangerous trend of teens vaping or JUULing. In February we exposed that it was already <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/8-investigates\/parents-clueless-about-dangerous-new-trend-sweeping-through-area-schools\/1078207913\">sweeping through schools<\/a><\/strong> in the Metro Richmond area.\u00a0Then in April, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/fda-cracking-down-on-discreet-vaping-product\/1138357826\">FDA cracked down<\/a><\/strong> on JUUL&#8217;s discreet design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This Fall, the FDA conducted a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/8-investigates\/fda-conducts-surprise-inspection-of-juul-labs\/1495581540\">surprise inspection of JUUL labs<\/a>.<\/strong> Then just a few days ago, the U.S. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/health\/most-teen-drug-use-is-down-but-officials-fret-vaping-boom-1\/1663015522\">Surgeon General issued a warning<\/a><\/strong> about vaping, and we learned more about how <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/schools-taking-drastic-action-to-police-growing-vaping-problem\/1663435464\">schools in our area are getting creative<\/a><\/strong> to handle the growing problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>AFM<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In October, dozens of cases of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/national\/cdc-confirms-10-more-cases-of-polio-like-illness\/1562278100\">acute flaccid myelitis (AFM)<\/a><\/strong>, a polio-like disease that causes paralysis, popped up across the country. There have been 165 cases confirmed across the U.S. this year, including 4 in Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In September, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/chesterfield-county\/5-year-old-chesterfield-boy-with-rare-illness-passes-away\/1482028766\">five-year-old Chesterfield boy died<\/a><\/strong> after battling AFM. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/8-investigates\/surge-in-mysterious-polio-like-illness-under-scrutiny-in-virginia\/1591728169\">Health officials in Virginia<\/a><\/strong> and elsewhere struggled to figure out what was causing this serious illness, and we learned about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/virginia-news\/virginia-boy-paralyzed-after-being-diagnosed-with-polio-like-illness\/1627224943\">other Virginia children affected.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>All the Recalls<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You probably had to check the labels on your romaine lettuce, ground beef, sausage, dog food and countless other things this year as a result of the dozens of recalls that were issued. And that&#8217;s just food. The FDA warned about teething ring safety, there were countless car recalls, and infant ibuprofen sold at several nationwide chains was pulled from shelves. For the full list, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/recalls\">click here<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8News\u00a0Takes Action, Gets Results<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>8News takes pride in taking action on behalf of the community we serve, and sometimes, our\u00a0reports can prompt change not just in Central Virginia, but across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Just recently, Kerri O&#8217;Brien was recognized for her investigation that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/8-investigates\/8news-investigates-crime-victims-victimized-again-across-the-commonwealth_2018032607012479\/1078055191\">discovered restitution payments weren&#8217;t getting delivered to crime victims<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0In fact, more than $1 million was sitting in\u00a0court clerk\u00a0offices around the state waiting to be delivered. She exposed taxpayer money was being used to fund painful experiments at McGuire VA in Richmond in which dogs are surgically implanted with pacemakers and made to run on treadmills until some have a heart attack. Ralph Northam signing a bill<\/a><\/strong> into law earlier this year that\u00a0prohibits Virginia from using state money for painful medical testing on dogs and cats. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/8-investigates\/congress-votes-to-extend-restrictions-on-deadly-dog-research\/1453917377\">Congress later voted to extend its\u00a0restrictions<\/a><\/strong> on dog testing at the Department of Veterans Affairs through fiscal year 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable investigations:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A historic year for women in politics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Undoubtedly,\u00a0women shifted the political landscape across the nation this year &#8212; and Virginia was a big reason why.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Virginia voters elected three candidates to join the House: Abigail Spanberger, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/politics\/local-election-hq\/jennifer-wexton-wins-virginias-10th-congressional-seat\/1577172048\">Jennifer Wexton<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/politics\/local-election-hq\/elaine-luria-d-wins-virginias-2nd-house-seat\/1577775659\">Elaine Luria<\/a><\/strong>. Each race garnered national attention.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We covered one of them,\u00a0the race for Virginia&#8217;s 7th Congressional District, extensively before the midterms. Abigail Spanberger, a\u00a0former CIA operations officer and University of Virginia\u00a0graduate,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/politics\/local-election-hq\/dave-brat-officially-concedes-7th-district-race-to-abigail-spanberger\/1577597813\">won 50.1 percent<\/a><\/strong> of the vote to unseat Rep. Of the 102 women, 36 were elected to the House for the first time this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, Democrats gained 40 House seats during the midterms.\u00a0In the Senate, Republicans added two seats and increased their majority to six.<\/p>\n<p>Head to our\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/politics\/local-election-hq\">8News&#8217; Local Election Headquarters<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for a deeper look into the 2018 Virginia midterms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b>&#8216;Is that a tank?&#8217;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to forget the June night when a soldier stationed at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, later identified as 29-year-old Joshua\u00a0Philip\u00a0Yabut of Richmond, led police on a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/soldier-accused-of-leading-police-on-chase-in-stolen-armored-military-vehicle\/1220800585\">wild chase through Central Virginia<\/a><\/strong> in a stolen armored vehicle that began on Route 460 and continued north on Interstate 95 before coming to an end in the middle of Broad Street in downtown Richmond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"modal-magnify-photo-1668968485\" class=\"reveal-modal\" data-reveal=\"\" aria-labelledby=\"modalTitle\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"dialog\">\n<figure class=\"media\">\n<div class=\"image-wrapper\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wric.com\/nxs-wrictv-media-us-east-1\/photo\/2018\/12\/20\/2_1528295672572_44647940_ver1.0_640_360_1545333094671_65557690_ver1.0_640_360.JPG\" alt=\"photo\"\/><small class=\"copyright\">Copyright 2018 Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc. Yabut did have his personal weapon with him, though, but had no ammunition. Thankfully no one was injured during the joyride, which <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/soldier-charged-in-armored-vehicle-chase-tweeted-during-joyride-filed-to-run-for-senate\/1222167049\">Yabut partially documented on his Twitter page<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, one felony count of eluding police and one felony count of unauthorized use of a vehicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/soldier-accused-of-leading-police-on-chase-in-stolen-armored-military-vehicle\/1220800585\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/strong> for complete coverage\/to watch raw video of the chase.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Get off my lawn!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Remember the\u00a0shocking news some students and parents in Henrico County learned at the start of the new school year? A resident had installed an electric fence just inches away from where students stand and wait for the bus. The homeowner who installed the fence said he grew tired of students trespassing and leaving trash on his property. The homeowner was told to remove it, but that he could re-install the fence inside his nearby property line.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/henrico-county\/parents-outraged-after-man-installs-electric-fence-near-henrico-county-bus-stop\/1417568503\">This story<\/a><\/strong> eventually went viral and was shared around the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Absolute revolution in cancer care&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We reported this story in December, and it still became one of our most-read of 2018:\u00a0VCU&#8217;s Massey Cancer Center\u00a0became the first and only center in the state to offer CAR T-Cell Immunotherapy.
