We can allocate a solid 20 minutes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/best-hair-dryer\" class=\"bb-a\">hairdryer<\/a>, throw money at fancy new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/best-hairbrushes\" class=\"bb-a\">brushes<\/a> and products, and keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/blonde-hair-colours\" class=\"bb-a\">highlights<\/a> in a constant scalp-touching state, yet our locks remain substandard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">Moments like these call for a miracle, or perhaps a miracle worker. That\u2019s why we sought out Luke Hersheson, Creative Director and Co-Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hershesons.com\/\" class=\"bb-a\">Hershesons<\/a>, stylist behind some of the best barnets in the business *one glance at his star-studded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lukehersheson\/tagged\/?hl=en\" class=\"bb-a\">Instagram<\/a> feed confirms* and author of the modern-day bible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hershesons.com\/great-hair-days-special-editions-blue.html\" class=\"bb-a\">\u2018Great Hair Days &amp; How to Have Them\u2019<\/a>, with a foreward by his client Victoria Beckham. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad__main is-hidden ad--article ad--article-rail ad--article-rail-top stick-wrapper \">\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">What\u2019s his advice? Forget everything you thought you knew. Put down the hairbrush, throw away the products, and let your roots grow out. Then invest in a few key items \u2013 a great hairdryer, quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/article\/should-you-wash-your-hair-twice\" class=\"bb-a\">shampoo and conditioner<\/a>, and your gran\u2019s favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/best-hairsprays\" class=\"bb-a\">hairspray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"1-a-great-cut-is-the-foundation-to-great-hair\">1. A great cut is the foundation to great hair<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cJust as a building needs solid foundations, beautiful hair stems from a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/hairstyle-ideas-pictures\" class=\"bb-a\">haircut<\/a>. This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/short-hairstyles-short-hair-cuts\" class=\"bb-a\">short<\/a> and perfectly neat &#8211; that\u2019s a very old-fashioned concept of a haircut, and may not be the right style for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"2-specify-the-ends-you-want\">2. Specify the ends you want<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cExplaining the kind of ends you want is just as important as specifying how short you would like to go. What are your options? There\u2019s \u2018chunky choppy\u2019, which keeps the weight but breaks it up slightly, think Alexa Chung. \u2018Perfectly blunt\u2019 is ruler-straight ends like Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, or \u2018silky and fluid\u2019 means ends that don\u2019t look freshly cut, as showcased by Sienna Miller.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"3-little-changes-make-a-big-difference\">3. Little changes make a big difference<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cIf left to its own devices, hair will grow into two long curtains. That\u2019s perfect for those wanting to channel 90\u2019s grunge Kate Moss, but most of us will need to do something about it. Even a simple change such as adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/celebrity-fringes\" class=\"bb-a\">curtain fringe<\/a>, or cutting sections around your chin will make an enormous difference to your hair, complement your face shape and highlight your best features.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad__main is-hidden ad--article ad--article-inline  \">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"4-a-regular-cut-is-non-negotiable\">4. A regular cut is non-negotiable<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cThe 6-8 week rule was formed in the 70&#8217;s when graphic haircuts were very popular and is only necessary for maintaining styles such as a chin-length <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/celebrities-with-bobs-bob-cut-hairstyles\" class=\"bb-a\">bob<\/a>. If you have long hair with buttery ends, or a grown out fringe, you might not need to cut your hair so often. Some hairstyles can even wait for up to 3 months. Find what works for your style and book in when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"5-hands-down-your-fingers-are-the-best-hair-too\">5. Hands down \u2013 your fingers are the best hair tool you own<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cI strongly believe my hands are my greatest styling tool, and don\u2019t think they are utilised enough by hairdressers. When I\u2019m styling hair on set, I rarely even use a brush \u2013 my own hands and hairspray are much more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<article class=\"bb-card\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/celebrities-with-bobs-bob-cut-hairstyles\" class=\"bb-card__link bb-card__link--article\">Hailey Bieber&#8217;s chin-grazing bob hairstyle is the inspiration you need to brave the chop<\/a><\/p>\n<\/article>\n<aside class=\"ad__main is-hidden ad--article ad--article-inline  \">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"6-lighten-up-on-the-product\">6. Lighten up on the product<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cYou really don\u2019t need a million products. From a styling point of view, Elnett hairspray and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/best-dry-shampoo\" class=\"bb-a\">dry shampoo<\/a>,plus a styling cream (we have an exciting new version coming out in January) are the only essentials you really need. To get the most out of your hair, learn how to do some simple tricks well. If you want volume, dry your hair upside down with a good hairdryer, pushing all the hair away from the direction it wants to lay. For texture, you can use your index finger and thumb to rub sections of hair together, particularly around the face to help frame it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"7-rough-dry-to-100-before-styling\">7. Rough dry to 100% before styling<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cWhen I cut a client\u2019s hair, I often show them how to dry it too. My key tip is to rough-dry your hair until it\u2019s 100% dry, before you reach for a brush or any other styling tools. If you do this stage right, it will make your life 100 times easier. Working in the same direction as the hairdryer, use your fingers like a big comb to stretch the hair out and create tension, pulling out any kinks and waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"8-dont-scrimp-on-shampoo-amp-conditioner\">8. Don\u2019t scrimp on shampoo &amp; conditioner<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cSome shampoos and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamourmagazine.co.uk\/gallery\/best-conditioner-bars\" class=\"bb-a\">conditioners<\/a> really are worth the investment. Brands such as K\u00e9rastase may be higher priced, but an enormous amount of science goes into the products and I really do think you get what you pay for. When it comes to colour, I also highly rate John Frieda products, for a cheaper option.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"9-great-colour-reflects-what-happens-naturally\">9. Great colour reflects what happens naturally<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cGrey hair doesn\u2019t have to be dyed and dark roots are not a faux pas \u2013 in fact, they are infinitely better than a lighter root. Unless you\u2019re going for a solid black, or a bleached look, your hair colour should look natural. Typically, your own hair would get lighter towards the ends and darker toward the roots. That doesn\u2019t mean a total dip dye, but requesting a gradient of shade will create a more natural-looking finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"bb-h2\" id=\"10-invest-in-a-hairdryer-that-actually-works\">10. Invest in a hairdryer that actually works<\/h2>\n<p class=\"bb-p\">\u201cA good, strong, powerful hairdryer will make your life so much easier. Choose wisely. There\u2019s no need to splash \u00a3300, but don\u2019t spend \u00a330 either. If you have a hairdryer with tonnes of power but with no heat, it\u2019s ineffective, and if you have one with heat and no speed, it will ruin your hair. There needs to be an even balance. These great hair dryers exist, people just don\u2019t know about them.
