The first video I ever watched on YouTube was the infamous “Malice at the Palace” player and fan brawl in 2004. Before that I had never heard of YouTube, ebaumsworld was my go to for videos. Back then YouTube was the wild west. Anything goes, no oversight, full movies uploaded and not taken down instantly! Over 15 years later YouTube has morphed from the wild west to one of the biggest things on the internet and ebaumsworld… hasn’t. While you can’t get everything for free on YouTube anymore you can find some of the best original content in media. The quality of some of the content is staggeringly good and Patreon and ads have made it possible for someone to make a living putting great (and not so great) content on YouTube. Here are a few of my favorite channels:
Summoning Salt’s World Record Progressions: Created by world record speed-runner these videos are the pinnacle of what YouTube Channels can be. These niche videos take super deep dives into the progression of video game world records and have an insane amount of detail packed into them to go with top notch music and production value. Even if you are not into speed running (or video games) these videos are worth checking out.
Poker Vlogs: As someone who used to make fun of my wife for following Mommy and Family Vlogs I now find myself subscribed to numerous poker vlogs! They not only show strategy details and action from the table, but also life outside of poker. My favorite is currently Brad Owen’s, but there are so many good ones worth checking out if you are into poker.
Lessons from the Screenplay: Great look at how great and not so great screenplays can make or break a film.
Peridiam’s Channel: The amount of great Survivor content is staggering online and this channel is no exception. The best videos on channel take deep dives into earlier season moves and how the influenced everything after it.
