Im a retired police mechanic. I used to take the nozzle, if it was broken, and spray paint it gold and give it as an award at the Christmas party.
Can you imagine if they saw a civvy driving along like that? How long before they were on the ground, tazed and knocked out cold?

In Australia you can’t pay for fuel till the nozzle is holstered. Wouldn’t see that here unless you stole the gas
I would imagine if vehicles only had the gas filler on the drivers side, this would happen much less. Seems to mostly happen in the US.
