When she said “There’s a bit of damage” maybe she meant “to the tree”
Maybe it’s the concussion talking.
All kidding aside I hope that she is OK and in the end it is just a car and can be replaced. My daughter totalled a car, and it cost me and her a lot of money that could have been spent elsewhere. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt and I hope that the same is true for your daughter.

Oh man, I remember those days. I was such a panicked young driver in the LA area, thankfully I never hit another car (another car hit me though) but I did hit a mailbox and a tree.
My parents were always just thankful I was okay, but they knew I was literally eaten up inside over it so there was no point in scolding me.
On the bright side for you, that Toyota protected your daughter well. 🙂
My wife called me at work to tell me she slid off the road. She was driving my truck. She there was a small dent behind the drivers door. The small dent was the whole bedside. She failed to mention the front bumper, air dam,grille,hood,headlight, marker lights, and drivers side mirror.
Ya. They will total that car (airbag deployed). Hope she is doing well..

I called my dad hysterically crying because I reversed into a bollard slowly and damaged the bumper a tiny bit, like literally cosmetic damage that we’re both gonna fix.
But I got so hysterical he thought I had wrecked the damn thing, I don’t think I’d ever be able to casually text and tell my dad I crashed.
Maybe if the tree hit back id believe her. But that doesn’t look like tree damage.
Luckily she’s ok
Her honesty should be rewarded, as she did fess up to taking her eyes off the road
She needs additional training how to react in a stressful situation.
She should pay the deductible, and if she is getting good grades, no other trouble, treat this incident as if she is a young adult who has made a mistake. No punishment per se, but she needs to financially cover for her error.
If she has bad grades, questionable friends, then she needs a more direct response, because her life is spinning a bit, and she will need a readjustment.
Glad nobody else was injured, hopefully the friend is ok.

Bit of damage to the tree maybe…
I have four daughters and three drive. I have looked each one in the eye and given them the exact same speech: ‘I don’t care what shape the car is in, please just walk back through our door’. To date, I have only opened the door one of them minus her car – and I have rarely been happier.
Trees don’t jump out in the middle of the road… shit looks so bad on the insurance report
I hope you’re making her pay for it. Hitting a stationary object that isn’t even on the road to begin with is nothing short of retarded.
Doesn’t deserve to be on the road, could’ve hurt or killed someone.
