Didn’t know book carving was a thing…I am very conflicted. Because this looks fycking amazing, but I also dislike the idea of defacing a perfectly good book… I feel utterly conflicted.

This isn’t defacing literature. It is one form of mass printed art (the original book) that has been turned into a different piece of art. Maybe that portrait is a character from that book…IDK.
It is pretty cool!
And as long as the book was not stolen the author got his money out of the deal.
