Nepal introduced banknotes of disputed territories, fearing rising tensions with India

Kathmandu, November 28 (IANS). Nepal’s central bank has introduced new notes of Rs 100 denomination from Thursday, depicting the disputed territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiadhura claimed by both India and Nepal. About five years ago, Nepal revised its political map to include these areas. Now the same updated map has been displayed on banknotes for the first time. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said that the card has been updated on the Rs 100 note as per the government’s decision. “After the supply of three hundred million Rs 100 notes by China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation, we have put them into circulation,” he said. In 2020, after India released a new map that included the disputed areas, Nepal also published its own map showing Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiadhura as part of Nepal. The then Prime Minister K. During the tenure of P. Sharma Oli, these areas were officially declared Nepal’s land by amending the Constitution. India-Nepal relations became more strained after this move. These areas are located between the northwestern border of Nepal and the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Despite several rounds of talks between the two countries, this border dispute has not yet been resolved and remains a sensitive issue in bilateral relations. Nepal Rastra Bank issues 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rupee notes, but only the 100 rupee note has the card printed on it. According to the central bank, the map has only been updated on this note. –IANS DSC/ABM Share this story Tags
