National Herald case: Crucial hearing on December 22 in Delhi High Court, ED challenges relief given to Sonia-Rahul

New Delhi, December 21 (IANS). The Delhi High Court will hear a criminal review petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday. In this petition, the order of the lower court was challenged, in which it refused to take cognizance of the ED’s money laundering complaint in the alleged National Herald case against Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and others. According to the case list published on the Delhi High Court website, a single-judge bench headed by Justice Ravinder Dudeja will hear the ED’s plea challenging the Rouselaan court order that dismissed the prosecution’s complaint filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Earlier on Tuesday, Vishal Gogane, the Special Judge (PC Act) of the Rouselaan court, refused to take cognizance of the ED’s complaint as it was not valid. However, the court gave relief to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and clarified that the ED is free to proceed with its investigation as per law. Apart from the Gandhi family, the ED has also named Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd as proposed accused in the case. The high-profile case pertains to allegations that senior Congress leaders conspired to illegally take over assets worth over Rs 2,000 crore from Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the parent publisher of the National Herald newspaper. He was paid a paltry sum of just Rs 50 lakh by Young Indian, in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are shareholders. The ED argued that the case was a serious economic offense and alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to form Young Indians to take over the properties of AJL for nominal amounts, the main objective of which was to favor the top leadership of the Congress. –IANS MS/DKP Share this story Tags
