Lawyer for defendant in Chromebook case denies meeting with Google

Jakarta – The lawyer of one of the defendants in the Chromebook laptop procurement corruption case, Ibrahim Arief (Ibam), denied that his client was involved in a meeting with Google in November 2019. The lawyer said Ibrahim was in England at the time. This was conveyed by Ibrahim’s lawyer, R Bayu Perdana, as the right to reply to the news titled ‘Lawyer Nadiem answers charge in Chromebook case, on Letter to IDR 809 billion’. The relevant news contains the right to reply from Nadiem’s lawyer on the points of the prosecutor’s charge. Scroll TO CONTINUE CONTENT Bayu questioned Nadiem’s lawyer’s statement about the meeting with Google in November 2019. The following is Bayu’s explanation in a written statement, Monday (22/12/2025): 1. In the news, Nadiem’s lawyer Makarim said that the meeting with Iam Google was held in November. We emphasize that these facts are false and misleading. In that period until early December 2019, Ibam was in London, England to fulfill an invitation for a job interview with the Facebook company (Meta) and only started work in January 2020. Therefore, it was impossible for Ibam to attend meetings or carry out coordination as claimed by lawyer Nadiem Makarim; 2. Ibam never had the power or authority to regulate the budget, human resources or determine the winner of the procurement supplier. As stated in our Note of Objection (Exception), our client’s role is limited to providing technical input. In fact, Ibam consistently provides technical warnings (Engineering Updates) regarding the weaknesses of the Chromebook system, which is also acknowledged in the Prosecutor’s Indictment; 3. We must emphasize that even in the Prosecutor’s Indictment, there is no description that Ibam acquired or enjoyed any property/profit from the alleged corruption case. Our client actually sacrificed his professional career for the sincere intention of helping the digitization of national education. Previously, the prosecutor read the indictment in the alleged corruption case in the procurement of Nadiem-era Chromebook laptops with the defendant Sri Wahyuningsih as Director of Primary Schools at the Directorate-General of Early Childhood Education, Basic Education and Secondary Education for 2020-2021, Mulyatsyah as Director of, I Arbudris20 and I. (IBAM) as consultant. Nadiem is also a defendant in this case. However, the indictment for Nadiem was not read out because Nadiem is still in hospital. Prosecutors said state losses in this case amount to IDR 2.1 trillion. (haf/imk)
