Jakarta – The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has deployed four domesticated elephants to transport wood debris in residential areas in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh. The wood was previously carried by flash floods that occurred some time ago. “We brought in four trained elephants, and all of them are from PLG (Elephant Training Center) Share,” said head of KSDA for the Sigli Aceh region, Hadi Sofyan, as reported by Antara on Monday (8/12/2025). The four elephants are called Abu, Mido, Ajis and Noni. Today, the mahot (handlers) took them to transport wood debris in the residential area of Gampong Meunasah Bie, Meurah Dua District, Pidie Jaya Regency. He said that these elephants will help clear materials stuck in people’s houses, especially to open road access to people’s houses buried by floods. Then the elephant will also help evacuate anything found at the site, including victims that have not been found. Apart from that, elephants can be used to deliver logistics to flood victims in Pidie Jaya. “For the duration, we will work here for seven days, the last one being December 14, 2025,” he said. Furthermore, he explained that the four tame elephants who helped to do the cleaning had long experience. The four of them were involved in cleaning materials during the 2004 Aceh tsunami disaster. “Based on previous experience, including during the tsunami in Aceh, the presence of elephants really helped to clear the debris,” he said. He added that they are currently only focusing on helping with disaster management in Pidie Jaya first, as access to other districts is not yet accessible. “So far we have not gone to other areas because surveys are still needed and access to other districts cannot be achieved. In the future, if necessary, we are ready to help,” said Hadi Sofyan. (mo/ybr)
