American film director Harvey Einstein, 67, was taken to a handcuffed prison, after being convicted of charges of sexual assault and rape of a large number of Hollywood stars and women in the art field.

Einstein, who was once one of the most powerful and influential Hollywood producers, was convicted of sexual assault on former production assistant Mimi Halley in 2006 and the rape of actress Jessica Mann in 2013.

Judge James Burke ordered that the famous producer, who could not stand on his feet and officers helped him, be detained before being handcuffed.

For his part, his lawyer said that his client, who had been using a medical device he relied on throughout the trial, would be placed in a medical facility at the Rikers Island Prison Complex in New York City.

The prison complex, known for violence and neglect, is a stark contrast to the Four Seasons Hotel, where Weinstein had breakfast at the start of his day.

"I am innocent," Arthur Idala's lawyer, Wanstein, was quoted as saying after the conviction. I am innocent. How can this happen in America?

The sentencing session was scheduled for March 11, 2020, and the lawyer pledged to appeal.

For her part, actress Rose McGown wrote on Twitter, saying that it was she who accused Einstein of raping her: Today is a great day and a great step forward in the way of our collective recovery.
