Blind side or not, the van passed the cyclist so should have known they were there.

They just indicated and went without checking.
London really needs to sort out it’s cycle routes. I’m sure it’s impossible but Amsterdam got this shit on lock. We seem to half ass the push for cyclists and to many get hurt or die. I’m a driver so I’ll be fine but I’m always cautious when I’m around cyclists. Most people just get annoyed they have to share the road.
Tesco. Spend a little, have one of our wagons shit mix a cyclist.
Basically, the van saw him, tried to burn it then cut left, he didn’t give a fuck. It honestly happens all the time.
This is also a very good example of when you put in a “cycle lane” and don’t include any provisions for a vehicle turning over it.
The Tesco van is completely in the wrong, there’s no disputing that, and I’d like to reiterate that he definitely knew the cyclist was there, and was definitely assuming the cyclist would brake to avoid him.
In Victoria, Australia, cyclists have to give way to give way to left-turning traffic…But, the vehicle (a) has to give adequate indication, and (b) you can’t cut a cyclist off like this. Whoever is there first has right of way in this situation…
Almost died from this two years ago. Got a fresh new tooth tho!
Holy shit fuck that guy
More like waiting until he finally was in the blind side to make the turn..
The rider with the camera looked right after the truck went past, I’d assume to see if the thru lane was clear. The truck has to have seen the lead rider, and that seems like intent.
I never expect cars to do the right thing when I’m on a bike. Or walking or sitting at a streetside cafe, or …
This happened to me, only it was a police officer who failed to check his mirrors. Fortunately (I guess) I went over the top of his car rather than coming to an uncomfortable hard stop against the side of a van.
I got a new bike wheel and a lift to the station under blues and twos for my pain… and then I very nearly crashed a traction engine when my shoulder froze up a few days later… fun times!
Woot woot pay day
This is why even cyclists should practice defensive driving.
That could have been so much worse. Yikes.
Lol I was expecting a plow through he was lucky
He got paid $$$
did a whole lot more than block
Damn, Tesco! You gangsta!!
I’ve had the unfortunate luck of this happening to me 3 times. Twice not so bad but once I flew over the hood and landed on the other side with massive road rash and a ruined bike. The guy didn’t even have insurance. I gave up road riding when my daughter was born. Didn’t want her to grow up without a father. Idiots are everywhere.
Almost this exact thing happen to me, and for the record I was cycling inside public park and not on the street. I was so mad!
Trucks have an additional blind side mirror specifically to prevent this.
Little bit of assumption since I don’t known where this vid was taken (I think UK). Trucks of this size are light enough not to require a truck driving license. As such normal car drivers without truck experience can rent them and stuff like this happens.
The truck driving license is all about blind side, corners and your big ass vehicle.
whAOoh! *tnk*
Fuuck
This is why I am not a fan of painted bike lanes. It just gives cyclists a place to be out of sight out of mind for drivers. Cyclists should either get a divided path or take the full lane
Just because you are in the right, does not mean you shouldn’t try to avoid this kind of thing, if the biker had slowed down a little bit maybe he could have spared himself the drama

This is awful, though Cyclists should have to pay road tax and be insured if you’re going to use the roads. Regardless if there’s a “bike lane”, you’re still on the road and run the risk of hitting and damaging my car and vice versa.
The truck driver was obviously wrong. But as a cyclist, he really should have known better than to stay in the truck’s blind spot. Right and wrong are of little consequence when one person walks away and the other goes to a hospital or a morgue.
That cyclist didn’t care enough for his life for a simple 5 seconds of defensive maneuvering. We’re not in 1830 anymore folks. Yes the van is an outright idiot, but why join the party? I’m that cyclist that stops at intersections where cars come out onto service roads from a supposed stop sign. I saved my own life a hundred dozen times over the last 40 years of cycling in the city.
