This Hong Kong Style Café Will Get Your Nostalgia Going
Hong Kong is known for its cha chaan tengs, which were originally brought into being in the 1950s when locals wanted a taste of western food, but at a cheaper price. Opened last year in Sai Ying Pun, Mr. S. Y. Punti plays a spin on this tradition in both its architectural design and food. It’s a quirky spot that has captivated many with its east-meets-west concept.
Hidden at the end of David Lane, Mr. S. Y. Punti offers a quaint setting for hipsters to gather and have a bite. The café is open ’till dark, serving coffee during the day and booze during the night. It doesn’t matter what time of the day you visit, there will be something on the menu just right for you.

Architecture
Mr S. Y. Punti is the perfect place to go if you’re a design fiend like me. The architecture is probably nothing like what you’ve seen before, the café being a sort of fusion between a cha chaan teng, a bar and a coffee shop. Half of Mr. S. Y. Punti adopts the typical cha chaan teng interior, while the other half serves as a bar table for those who want a beer. Let’s not forget about the outdoor seating too, which the café has generously spread along the whole of David Lane, so everyone gets a spot.
Food
Apart from the architecture, food is the other highlight of Mr. S. Y. Punti. The neighbourhood joint serves a menu that draws on traditional cha chaan teng food while giving the dishes a twist. Think rice rolls and dumplings, but also think burgers and all day breakfasts. The hybrid dishes will have you curious for more.
Pictured above is the Cold Noodles in Homemade Chill Tomato Consommé, a mixture of tomato and wood ear mushrooms on a bed of Cantonese egg noodles doused in tomato soup. Served with a tangy vinegar dressing on the side, it’s a refreshing option to order for Hong Kong’s hot weather.
