Kejriwal offers free ride for women, AAP's 'freebie' for votes? | The Urban Debate With Faye D'Souza

On The Urban Debate With Faye D’Souza tonight, The Delhi government has announced free public transport to all women in the Capital. While making the announcement, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the move would empower women to work and study and would encourage public transport as well which is considered to be the safest. He also added that the scheme would cost the government around 700-800 crore rupees. Arvind Kejriwal also mentioned that he did not need the Centre’s approval for the same. This announcement has sparked off a massive row Politicians across party lines are calling it a cheap stunt to buy votes just ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi. Some women activists have slammed the move saying that women in Delhi want dignity not doles.

We ask -How is offering free bus and metro tickets to women necessarily going to guarantee safety? Can Arvind Kejriwal explain how he will procure funds for his scheme that is seen by many as blatant appeasement? How does Arvind Kejriwal ensure the safety of women by offering them a free ride in Metros? Did Lok Sabha poll rout prompt Arvind Kejriwal to announce urban sop in form of a free metro ride to women in Delhi? If the AAP was truly committed towards women’s empowerment, why did it field only one female candidate in Delhi in the 2019 polls? Is offering metro and bus rides for free to all women not patronizing towards women who have paid metro fares for over 17 years? If the primary purpose of this proposal by AAP is to ensure women’s safety, why is it being put into action four and a half years after the party came to power in Delhi? Listen in to know!

  1. Faye D'souza where is bjp menifesto. why it was missing from your hand. Why u didnt ask single question to bjp minister that what they done for women safety from last 5 years. besharm bjp from where they get so much of confidence. Ask question about mcd schools, why there is garbage all over delhi. what they done for black money from swiss bank. where are accuse of 2g, 3g commonwealth, coal scam, vyapam, chikki scam. people dont ask question for scam. they are not bother for their taxes here.

  2. AAP is the only reason , the corruption has reduced. We need a team of quality assessors that need to check on every effort, new initiatives, government officials for a smooth and positive beginning. This is me being positive, which is rare living in India.

  3. It is ridiculous how Sukriti is so dismissive of gender imbalance – the move is not for privileged people like us but the economically disadvantaged – whilst she does talk about extending the benefits to the male population from economically weaker sections, which is a fair point in itself – odds are particularly stacked against women in lower income families thereby accentuating the issue of gender imbalance and not diminishing it – it is definitely a step in the right direction and over time, if implemented correctly, a case can be made for extending the benefits to other sections of the population as argued by Sukriti – the presenter here has a bigger responsibility of driving the narrative and not misleading public – to that end, Ms Faye could begin by calling upon panelists who are not ignorant and talk through their hats- I am sorry, I do not mean to single out Sukriti but I could not bear to listen to such shoddy debate beyond the first 10-15 mins

  4. Safety of women is every individuals responsibility, every women is someone mother, sister, grandmother, daughter. When individuals aren't taught respecting individuals then safety will forever be a problem, even if CCTV r put in place, that still doesn't stop a fool to commit crime. Anyways it's only now that CCTV is considered to be an option for safety, but still we need to educate every individuals about basic values of humanity, only then will every place be safe. That said it's amazing that AAP is at least doing something.

  5. The word “FREE” is misleading. If AAP is paying from their party fund then it wud be called free . If government is paying then its tax money that could be used elsewhere .

Secondly the number of bussed in delhi in 2011 was approx 6000 . Now it is approx 3500 . And the busses are old and population has increased .

This is like free food at a restaurant but when you reach the restaurant there is no food .

  6. RTI ..As per a study on 16 information commission, as on December 31, 2015, the total number of pending RTI cases was 187,974. This clearly shows the plight of the cases lying with information commissions. he whole concept of getting the information via RTI would go meaningless if the delay in hearing of cases continues as the grievances of the applicants would not be redressed.
The other major problem that violates the right of transparency of the people is the tendency of the
PIOs to exclude information stating that it is exempt from being disclosed, even when such exemption has not been given under the Act. The information to which people have a legal right is straight away denied to them, by the authorities.
