Common ‘healthy’ food-swap linked to faster memory loss and ability to remember words

Scientists warn their research found it led to the aging of the brain by more than 1.5 years with under-60s and those with diabetes at greater risk

When it comes to losing weight one of the first steps many take is to ditch sugar, often switching to artificial sweeteners. However the “healthy” swap might be playing havoc with the brain, scientists have found.

Those using higher levels of artificial sweeteners – equivalent to drinking just one glass of diet soda a day – were left with an increased decline in their ability to remember and recall words compared with those who consumed the lowest amounts.

Researchers, using data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health, tracked 12,772 adults over eight years. They discovered that those taking the higher amounts aged faster in cognitive terms by 1.6 years.

The scientists split the artificial sweetener intake into three levels averaging between 20 milligrams per day in the lowest group to 191 milligrams in the highest group. Sorbitol was the most common at 64 milligrams per day.

The report, published in Neurology, said participants were tested three times during follow-up. These tests included memory, verbal fluency, recall and processing speed.

When compared with the lowest group, the middle group declined 35 percent faster in overall cognition. Meanwhile, the highest group declined 62 percent faster.

Lead study author Dr. Claudia Kimie Suemoto, an associate professor of geriatrics and director of the Biobank for Aging Studies at the University of São Paulo’s Medical School in Brazil, said: “People who consumed the most low- or no-calorie sweeteners showed a 62% faster global cognitive decline than those who consumed the lowest amount — that’s the equivalent of 1.6 — years of brain aging.

“Participants in the middle tier had a 35% faster rate of global cognitive decline — which is about 1.3 years of aging — than people who consumed the lowest amount of these sweeteners. Now, the study is only observational — I cannot say to you that artificial sweeteners cause cognitive decline. We do know, however, that these sweeteners are associated with worse cognitive trajectories.”

Seven types of artificial sweeteners were included in the study. These were:

  • aspartame
  • saccharin
  • acesulfame-K
  • erythritol
  • xylitol
  • sorbitol
  • and tagatose.

Six of these were linked with decline however tagatose, a sugar found naturally in dairy and fruit, showed no clear effect. The researchers noted that one can of diet soda contains roughly the same amount of sweeteners as those in the highest group.

Researchers found the effect was greater in those under 60. People with diabetes also had a stronger link.

Dr. Suemoto said. “People with diabetes are more likely to consume artificial sweeteners as a substitute for sugar, so their overall exposure may be higher than people without diabetes,” she says. “In addition, diabetes itself is already a strong risk factor for cognitive decline related to Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, which probably makes the brain more vulnerable to harmful exposures.”

The researchers wrote in the conclusion that the findings “suggest the possibility of long-term harm” on cognitive function from using artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols. However they said there were limitations in their study.

The intake was only measured at the start to changes over the course of the study were not tracked. Other limitations included a lack of brain imaging of biomarkers to confirm mechanisms.

Dr. Thomas Holland, an instructor in the department of internal medicine, a division of digestive diseases and nutrition at Rush University’s Institute for Healthy Aging in Chicago, said the findings would “hold particular relevance” for neurologists and health care professionals who manage patients with cerebrovascular disease and cognitive impairment.

Writing in an editorial published alongside the study he added: “The widespread assumption that LNCS (low- and no-calorie sweeteners) represent a safe sugar substitute may be misguided, especially given their ubiquity in products marketed as “healthier” alternatives.”

However, a body representing the sweeteners industry urged caution over the findings. It said: “While the study has garnered media attention, it is essential to place its results within the broader, established scientific consensus on sweeteners safety.”

It said the study was observational which “can only show a statistical association, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship”. It added: “The reported link between sweetener consumption and cognitive decline does not prove that one causes the other. As with all such research, the findings may be influenced by many confounding factors, including overall dietary patterns, lifestyle choices and other health conditions. The study’s own authors acknowledge this, cautioning against drawing causal conclusions.

“It is also important to note the study’s specific limitations. The results are inconsistent across different age groups and varied by diabetes status, which raises questions about biological plausibility. Also, the study relies on a self-reported method for dietary data collected only once at baseline 8 years ago, which is often inaccurate, can introduce significant bias, and does not consider changes in dietary habits and product formulations over time.

“Furthermore, all sweeteners were aggregated in a single value from both high-intensity sweeteners and polyols, while we know they all have very different properties and approved use levels. In practice, the “combined sweetener” intake was dominated by polyols that are used in higher quantities, while the intake of aspartame, acesulfame-K and saccharin was very low even for the high consumption group (at the order of 1-2% of the respective Acceptable Daily Intakes). These values suggest a limited and narrow range of exposure and a high likelihood of floor effects that can bias results. Floor effects are known to distort statistical models, leading potentially to false positives.

“The safety of low/no calorie sweeteners has been consistently confirmed by leading global health authorities. These include the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). These organizations conduct comprehensive safety assessments based on the totality of scientific evidence, not just a single study.

“Sweeteners provide a safe and effective way to reduce sugar and calorie intake, a key public health goal for managing conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. By offering a sweet taste without the calories, they help consumers adhere to dietary guidelines that recommend reducing free sugars.

“The ISA remains committed to providing science-based information on low/no calorie sweeteners. We advocate for a holistic view of the scientific evidence, which consistently demonstrates that approved sweeteners are a safe and useful tool for public health.”

Expert breaks down Bonnie Blue’s claim she slept with 1,057 men in 12 hours

Bonnie Blue shocked the internet when she announced her latest stunt, but is it scientifically possible? We speak to experts on the worrying implications of such a physically and emotionally demanding event

We asked an expert whether it was scientifically possible to sleep with over 1,000 men in a day
Bonnie Blue claims to have slept with over 1,000 men so we asked an expert whether it was scientifically possible(Image: Supplied)

Bonnie Blue claims to have broken a world record by sleeping with 1,057 men in 12 hours, but many critics have questioned whether it’s even possible.

The controversial adult star has openly admitted to using ‘rage-bait’ tactics to go viral, and her latest ‘challenge’ has sparked safety concerns – and confusion. In a TikTok video announcing the shocking feat, she claimed the “big 1,000” was “well and truly done”. It comes just days after fellow OnlyFans star Lily Phillips said she was ‘in training’ to hit the very same number in 24 hours.

Detailing the logistics behind such a “marathon”, Bonnie’s PR told The Sun: “She slept with 1,057 people. Even she hit 1,000, there were still 57 left in the queue who Bonnie wanted to pleasure before ending the 12-hour day.” We spoke to psychosexual therapist and sex educator Natasha Silverman on the mental toll such an event could have, as well as whether it’s scientifically possible.

READ MORE: Bonnie Blue explains exactly how she slept with ‘1,057 men in just 12 hours’

Despite Bonnie doing the extreme challenge for work and not pleasure, Natasha said it’s “unusual” for women to “naturally remain in a state of pleasurable sexual arousal for a 12 hour period.” She explained: “Having sex when no longer ‘turned on’ can be psychologically and physically painful and distressing, and increase the chances of sexual interactions becoming traumatic.”

There are 720 minutes in 12 hours, which means each man would have had less than 60 seconds with the star. Bonnie reflected on the aftermath of the extreme event in her own video and said: “It just feels like I’ve had a heavy day in the bedroom – which is exactly what I had.”

Delving into the science behind sex, Natasha said the female body physically changes when it’s aroused to help accommodate a penis, and to reduce the pain. She explained: “It does this by sending more blood and fluid to the area, engorging the clitoris, and doing something called ‘vaginal tenting’ which is where the vagina lengthens considerably, and the cervix moves ‘out of the way’.”

The expert added that without arousal or stimulation it’s “unlike that a female body could stay in a state of arousal for very long at all.” Natasha said: “Even with adequate stimulation an extremely long sexual session would make a woman vulnerable to pain, tears, internal physical trauma or at the very least discomfort would be practically guaranteed, with sexually transmitted infections being a real risk. Lubricant is often necessary for women during far shorter sexual interactions to enhance arousal and decrease pain.”

The expert said that if Bonnie slept with 1,057 men in 12 hours, she may have used dissociation to cope. She explained that dissociation is a “coping mechanism” where the person may “disconnect” from their body or emotions as a way to protect themselves from discomfort, distress, anxiety, or emotional overload.

Natasha said when sex lasts for an extended period, or involves multiple partners, it can lead to feelings of being “out of control” or “detached” from the experience. And while some people might find out-of-body experiences “pleasurable” or even “transformative” others may find them “distressing”. It comes as other experts have warned that the current online landscape is encouraging sex workers to go to great lengths to succeed in reaching mass audiences, as it favors viral and shocking content.

And as these extreme OnlyFans stars continue to gain notoriety, there are grave fears that impressionable young people are getting a warped idea of what sex and relationships actually involve. Adult star Lily Phillips raised this issue herself in a recent documentary, remarking that some subscribers may be expecting certain things from women that don’t necessarily reflect real life.

Health psychologist Jo Rodriguez, from Straightforward Psychology, told The Mirror that younger “brains are not adaptive enough to recognize actually that’s not the real world”. She warned: “It’s a version of reality that is given to you in the context of the situation. These young people, they see this, they expect this to be what relationships are like. How women are or what men are like, and then believe that they need to fit these roles. (…) It can create all sorts of problems for both men and women, because it is not an accurate reflection of reality..”

Bonnie Blue addressed her critics in a previous interview with us, saying: “These women hating on me can’t seem to understand that some women do things other than stand in the kitchen and let their husbands pay the bills. They seem to have a big issue with that. But the more hate I get, the more it increases my bank balance.”

Of the backlash, Bonnie added: “I’ve received a lot of death threats. Some say, ‘I’m going to stamp your head in’, ‘I can’t wait to put you under the ground’, and ‘I hope you get tortured and kidnapped’. They think I’m the one in the wrong, however, what I’m doing is completely legal. They want to kill me – how am I the one that needs help?”

Nigella Lawson’s anti-aging eye cream ‘makes foundation sit perfectly’ under her eyes

TV cook Nigella Lawson shares the £29 secret to her crease-free under-eyes

When the eternally youthful Nigella Lawson recommends a beauty product rather than a recipe, we take note. This week, the effortlessly glamorous TV cook shared her latest ‘make-up bag heroes’, and among them was one skincare gem that immediately had us zooming in: DoSe by VH Vitamin CEyes Cream£29.

Nigella, to her own admission, has never been one for long-winded skincare rituals, preferring smart formulas that actually earn their place on her bathroom shelf. So, when she admitted that this particular eye cream made her look forward to applying it, you know it’s something special. She also credited it with making her foundation sit better under her eyes — a solution to a problem many of us face.

As we age, we might want more coverage, but too much only draws attention to fine lines. A product that smoothes and prepares the skin, meaning you need less makeup overall, is an essential for all pre-makeup routines.

READ MORE: I’ve unboxed dozens of beauty advent calendars – Elemis’ one is by far the best’

Nigella says: “I would be failing in my duty here if I didn’t tell you about DoSe Vitamin C Eye Cream. I’m incredibly lazy (and hate transitional states) so I’m always after the fastest make-up routine possible, but the feel of this eye cream is so silky and so calming, I actually look forward to putting it on. The clincher is that it really has seemed to make foundation sit so much better under my eyes and, moreover, makes me need less of it. This is crucial as, while you might need more cover-up there as you get older, the sad truth is that the more you pile on, the more it can seem to age you”.

At first glance, the DoSe by VH Vitamin C Eye Cream looks like a typical sleek white tube, but what’s inside is doing all the heavy lifting. The formula is powered by tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, an oil-soluble form of vitamin C that brightens and firms. It’s joined by caffeine, which helps to depuff and revive tired eyes, plus a few smoothing emollients to keep everything hydrated and crease-free. The cooling metal tip of the applicator also instantly wakes up your face with one sweep.

At £29, it’s not a bargain buy, but it’s a far cry from the eye creams that can easily stretch past the £100 mark. Given the buzz and the fact it’s now sitting pretty in Nigella’s own makeup bag, it’s safe to assume this multitasking little tube won’t stay a quiet secret for long.

However, if you want another recommendation under the £10 mark, our Mirror beauty team loves The Inkey List’s Caffeine Eye Cream, now £8 on Boots.

I went into Sainsbury’s with £80 and found five full outfits – one look costs £10

Our head of fashion took a trip to Sainsbury’s TU to pick up five outfits totaling under £80, with one looking coming in at £10.80

With the cost of clothes creeping up almost as fast as the weather changes, refreshing your wardrobe can feel more stressful than fun. But rather than spiral into online cart abandonment, I decided to try something different. I gave myself an £80 budget, headed to my local Sainsbury’s shop, and set myself a mission: find five outfits that looked good enough to be designer, worked for that tricky summer-into-autumn stretch (because who has the budget to buy clothes for just one season?) and wouldn’t leave me with checkout regret.

Supermarkets have quickly become my secret treasure troves for quality, designer-influenced pieces, and if you haven’t taken a proper scan of Sainsbury’s Tu’s aisles before, virtual or in-person, you’re missing out. I’m always left amazed by how luxe-looking new-season pieces can be, and I was spoiled for choice with my summer-to-autumn brief. Nor do I get a mental total of my purchases in hand, I flicked through pieces, ticking off core trends: relaxed tailoring, soft knits and elevated basics and surprisingly polished silhouettes. At the end of my trip, I left with five mix-and-match capsule looks that felt grown-up and luxury, but all came in at £77.10.

So, can you guess which full outfit costs under £11?

Look 1: Total price £10.80

Shop the look

Light Brown Suede Effect Mini Skirtnow £5.40

Light Brown Suede Effect Topnow £5.40 (in store only)

Online alternative: Tan Faux Suede Regular Shirt£22.50

I’m going strong for the first look with my total bargain find. The boxy suede-effect top scanned at £5.40, and the same for the zip-up skirt. Even the man on the checkout commented on the bargain with a wide-eyed “That’s good, isn’t it?”. I’m happy we both agreed. You can still pick up this gorgeous transitional skirt online in plenty of available sizing, but you’ll have to head to your local store to pick up the exact top, as I grabbed one of the final few pieces from the discounted rail.

I do love TU’s new-in longer-sleeved suede-effect shirt as a replacement, though, if you can splash out a little more cash on the look. I didn’t spend anything on the boots, as these I had lying around my cupboard, but if you want to pick them up for yourself, they’re Boohoo’s Low Stiletto Knee High Boots, also a bargain at £26.60!

Look 2: Total price £21.40

Shop the look

Green Knit Vest, £16 (currently in-store only)

Online alternative: Metallic Stitch Sleeveless Vest, £18

Light Brown Suede Effect Mini Skirtnow £5.40

I didn’t expect to love this olive green knit vest top as much as I do. TU has a big range of knit vests and collar-detail vests with intricate stitching, and I could have easily bought several. I chose this one because it’s not a color I have a lot of in my wardrobe, but I think it flatters a whole range of skin tones and hair colors. I could easily have paired this with a pair of jeans and trainers, but I love the elevated combination of a suede skirt and a statement boot – cool enough for gray summer days or warm enough with layers as we hit autumn’s approach.

Again, I’m pairing the top and the skirt with my Boohoo Low Stiletto Knee High Boots.

Look 3: Total price £53.40

Shop the look

Stone Relaxed Edge Co-ord Blazer, £32

Green Knit Vest, £16 (in-store only)

Online alternative: Metallic Stitch Sleeveless Vest, £18

Light Brown Suede Effect Mini Skirtnow £5.40

This is essentially the same as the last look, but I’m showing how you can throw on an extra layer to give it a more luxe and dressy (or office appropriate) edge. I own a blazer just like this one from Karen Millen, and honestly, I couldn’t tell a huge amount of difference in the fit or quality. I sized up for the TU blazer to give it a bit of a boyfriend effect, rather than fitted, and I love the way it looks. Extra points go to TU for the stripe lining fabric, which gives the cuffs a nice effect.

The blazer was my priciest purchase of the day at £32, but it’s a piece you’ll reach for time and time again all through summer and autumn, so well worth investing in. Opt for a neutral shade like this one so you can pair it with lots of different outfit colors.

Again, my footwear is from my existing shoe wardrobe. However, they’re another affordable Boohoo buy, which can still be shopped online for £10 in the tan colourway.

Look 4: Total price £34

Shop the look

Green Knit Vest, £16 (in-store only)

Online alternative: Metallic Stitch Sleeveless Vest, £18

Beige Textured Wide Leg Co-ord Trousers, £18

This is the outfit that I thought, “Wow, this really looks expensive”. I wasn’t sure about the trousers when I grabbed them off the hanger, as the texture felt quite lightweight and I worried you’d see my bum wobble around when I walked. But, I needn’t have feared because they’re so flattering – and so comfortable. I love them paired with this knit vest, but I’d also style them with a crisp white shirt or an oversized knit in the autumn. They’re so versatile – a definite wardrobe must-have, especially if you don’t love showing your legs.

Look 5: Total price £23.40

Shop the look

Light Brown Suede Effect Topnow £5.40 (in store only)

Online alternative: Tan Faux Suede Regular Shirt£22.50

Beige Textured Wide Leg Co-ord Trousers, £18

Finally, for my last look, I combined my bargain find of a £5.40 boxy suede-effect top with the textured trousers, and I really love it. Paired with my £10 Boohoo sandals, I really think this is the perfect summer office look. Chuck on the blazer if it’s a colder day, or swap the chunky sandals out for a kitten heel sandal, if you want it to look more dressy.

A final word

As I say, I got the five pieces for you, as shown above, for under £80, and then mixed and matched them to create the five different looks. With some of the pieces being sale items, stock for sizing will vary. If you’ve been inspired to do a supermarket sweep of your own, I also recommend heading to Tesco F&F, where there are also plenty of trend-led pieces. The brand’s big summer sale is currently on, and my top picks include the Tie Front Sleeveless Waistcoat, now £12, and Striped Button-Up Cardigan, now £15.

Stay tuned for my next supermarket scan, where I’ll be scouring the new-ins from George at Asda for style gems.

Cheap one ingredient recipe upgrade creates the ‘best rice of your life’

This easy fried rice recipe is perfect for a last-minute dinner as it takes just 15 minutes, uses only one pan and requires ingredients you likely have in your fridge

If you don’t know what to make for dinner, then try this delicious rice recipe which uses leftover ingredients and takes just 15 minutes.

It’s always a nightmare when you finish a long day’s work and realize you don’t have anything ready for dinner. In these moments, it’s tempting to opt for your favorite takeaway. However, this quickly adds up financially and can even take a toll on your health, as many popular takeaways are high in calories and other additives.

Fortunately, a recipe from the producer The Kitchn has revealed a brilliant way to use old ingredients to make a quick and nutritious meal – that also tastes delicious. Hot dog fried rice may sound like a strange combination, but according to the cooking expert it’s one of her “favorite quick meals to make at home”.

READ MORE: Bananas last longer when you swap the fruit bowl for one simple itemREAD MORE: Avocados won’t brown when stored with ‘one fruit better than any other’

The entire recipe involves using leftover hotdogs, cold rice and whatever veg you happen to have lying around in your fridge. The Kitchn writes: “This recipe works because it hits that perfect balance between nostalgic and practical.

“Fried rice is one of those dishes that’s endlessly flexible, and using hot dogs gives it a salty, savory bite that works surprisingly well!”

Even better, it comes together all in one pan, meaning you don’t have to deal with a big pile of dirty dishes when you’re done.

The first step is ingredient prep. According to the recipe, you should slice four leftover hot dogs crosswise into 2.5-cm-thick slices, mince three cloves of garlic, thinly slice four spring onions (separating the green parts from the white parts), and chop one-and-a-half cups of whatever vegetables you please.

To make the sauce, in a small bowl, mix together a tablespoon of dark soy sauce, a tablespoon of soy sauce, two tablespoons of oyster sauce and chili garlic sauce to taste.

Next, heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil and scramble your two large eggs. Once cooked, put on a plate and set aside.

Then, in the same pan, cook the hot dogs until they turn a brown color. Add the garlic and white parts of the spring onions, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Once you’ve done this, you can throw in your chopped vegetables and stir-fry for a few minutes until tender but still crisp. Then you can throw in your four cups of cold cooked white or brown rice and add it to the pan, stirring well to combine.

Last but not least, pour in the sauce, stir to coat and place the eggs back in the pan. Mix until evenly heated through, then top with the chopped spring onion greens before serving.

What to do if someone parks on your drive – and it’s not called police

The law surrounding parking on private driveways can be a gray area and many homeowners may not know their rights

One might assume that a quick call to the police or local council would swiftly deal with an unwelcome car parked on your driveway, but it’s not that simple. Rule 243 of the Highway Code lists various no-go zones for parking, such as near school entrances, bus stops, within ten meters of a junction and spots that block emergency services.

Yet, when it comes to private driveways, the issue is considered trespassing – a civil matter – leaving both police and council powerless to remove the vehicle from your property.

In such a predicament, homeowners must resist the urge to move the car themselves to avoid potential charges of vandalism.

The recommended course of action involves a calm chat with the vehicle owner, but if the nuisance persists, legal steps may be necessary.

To sidestep these problems, homeowners can use removable bollards, traffic cones, or expandable barriers to block access when they’re out.

Installing clear “No Parking” or “Private Driveway” signs, gates, or surveillance cameras can also help keep those pesky unauthorized parkers at bay.

However, some savvy homeowners are cashing in by renting out their driveways. A recent survey has shown that nearly one in four Brits are either already hiring out their driveway space or mulling over the idea to rake in some extra cash, particularly when they’re located near hotspots like stadiums, arenas and bustling city centers where parking is at a premium during major events.

The trend is catching on big time among football fans, with residents near stadiums making a tidy sum by offering up their driveways for supporters’ cars on match days.

LeaseLoco.com’s CEO John Wilmot said: “Many homeowners are shocked to find out that a stranger parking in their driveway is not actually a criminal offense, despite it being a clear violation of personal space.

“This legal gray area can be frustrating, especially if you live in a busy area where it happens regularly, so it’s important to take steps to prevent unwanted parking in the first place.

“While the most effective way to protect your property is installing a driveway gate, putting out simple deterrents like parking bollards or posts, cones and signs can also help prevent strangers from parking in your driveway.

“On the flip side, if you live near venues or in busy areas, this situation can be turned into an opportunity, as you could allow other motorists to park in your driveway – on your own terms.

“Renting out your driveway when you’re not using it is becoming increasingly popular and can be a great way to earn some extra income.

“If you do find yourself in a situation where you come home and see a stranger parking on your property, remember to never take matters into your own hands, or it can land you in serious trouble. Start off with a calm conversation, and if the issues persist, you may need to take legal action.”
